I'm super happy that you've joined this fun scavenger hunt! If you're not familiar with me, I'm Jaime Jo Wright, author of the Christy-Award winning The House on Foster Hill, and lover all of things gothic and mysterious. (Hence having author pics taken in a graveyard - eyerolls are welcome and understood). I also love happy things too! LOL Like bow hunting (is that happy?), reading, cuddling with my kids, and anything cats! All the cats!

My newest release is Echoes Among the Stones. It's a split-time story of grief, of unsolved crime, a dollhouse reenacted crime scene, and a little romance sprinkled in. Set in 1946 and present, our heroines must face grief head-on as they solve a cold case that has stayed warm in hearts for over seventy years.

It's available at all your favorite sellers. Here's a link to my favorite, Baker Book House.

That being said ... my blog posts are always a bit less lighthearted and more of an explanation of the mystery and mayhem of history. History is rife with story ideas. Here's how my unsettling mind gets some ideas ...

The holiday season is filled with warmth. With merriment. With ... murder? Strangely enough, sometimes the holidays bring out the worst in people. A quick search of the Internet can open up a world of interesting holiday history ... but since my search history already is questionable, I did the searching for you. Here are a few lesser-known crimes that just might wind their way into a book someday ...

December 24th, 1900 -

Thwarted love can really ruin a party. It was Kentucky, it was the local holiday dance, it was two men in love with the same woman. In true gentlemanly maturity, one tripped the other (so the story goes) and bullets began to fly. Having dodged them all, our intrepid-um-hero(?), ran next door for a shotgun and returned to finish off his opponent. Needless to say, this wasn't a happily-ever-after.

December 25th, 1895 -

Don't steal his hat. Just don't. Anyone who's watched a Western knows when you're playing poker in a saloon with a known criminal, you don't swipe his hat! Of course, in 1885, they hadn't the luxury of seeing their glamorized present on film. So, on Christmas night, Stagger Lee shot Billy Lyons dead. Over his hat. I'd say that hat was "priceless".

December 25th, 1929 -

A disturbed father decided enough was enough. To this day, though, no one understands the motive behind Charlie Lawson's disturbing spree that ended in the deaths of his wife and children. More disturbing, was the fact he sent his one son on an errand shortly before he snapped, thus saving his eldest son from his murderous rampage.
(read more here, but beware, it's unsettling)

So why on earth would I choose to highlight murderous holidays? I'm not sure, to be honest. There's a part of me that wonders why people tend to snap on the holidays. The Internet is rife with very disturbing stories of such things happening. Sometimes I wonder if it's the hopelessness of life culminating on a day when hope sparkles in every window. It's the collision of the two that finally drives a person to do horrific deeds.

What do you think drives the disturbed at Christmas? Because is a Stetson hat truly deserving of such an outcome?

  2. I know the holidays are difficult for people who are grieving, but i'm not sure why there would be a lot of murders at that time of year....except, some families are rife with strife. lol. So maybe those family reunions aren't really reunions but horrible encounters..just saying..

Happy BIRTHDAY to Christy-Award Winning "The House on Foster Hill"

Can you believe it's been a year since The House on Foster Hill first released to the world? It's been a whirlwind year and it's so fun to go back and revisit the characters of the book. Some little known trivia facts about THOFH: 1. The idea of finding a body in a hollowed out tree was not based purely on my imagination. In fact, it's happened more than once in history. This particular story was the one that first planted the idea in my head Click Here To Read (Warning: black and white historical photos of skeletal remains) 2. Human trafficking on the Great Lakes was not uncommon, although it's definitely not something heralded or glorified in the upper midwest history books. One such trafficker of women and other questionable cargo was a pirate by the name of Dan Seavey . 3. In THOFH, Grant Jesse--our modern day hero--has a pet pit bull name Sophie. Contrary to popular myth, pit bulls are not naturally violent or aggressive dogs. In fact, in the 1800&#
